The Prevent strategy

The Prevent strategy is 1 of the 4 elements of CONTEST, the government’s counter-terrorism strategy.  It aims to stop people becoming terrorists or supporting terrorism.  It

• responds to the ideological challenges we face from terrorism and aspects of extremism, and the threat we face from those who promote these views
• provides practical help to prevent people from being drawn into terrorism and ensure they are given appropriate advice and support
• works with a wide range of sectors (including education, criminal justice, faith, charities, online and health) where there are risks of radicalisation that we need to deal with.

As part of their remit to implement the Prevent Strategy, schools are required to promote both SMSC and British values through both their taught and enrichment curriculums. The document here sets out the understanding and knowledge expected of pupils as a result of Ansford Academy meeting the standard to respect ‘fundamental British values’ as part of the PREVENT strategy.

We teach and promote the concept of DEMOCRACY through:

• electing an Academy Council and following democratic processes in its running.
• electing our Tutor group Council representatives
• consulting students and families through questionnaires on a range of topics
• involving students in decision making including decisions over the Rewards system
• Taking part, and having representatives elected for, the Somerset Youth Parliament.
• appointing and developing a Student Leadership Team to aid with activities like sports
• applying peer assessment across the Academy
• promotion of oracy through the taught curriculum and tutorial programme
• MUFTI Days voted for, and chosen by, students
• our PSHCE curriculum
• the development of the curriculum
• teaching students to respect public institutions and services
• taking part, and representing the academy, on issues raised by the Town Council

We teach and promote THE RULE OF LAW through:

• our Behaviour Policy – Consequences and Rewards
• academy assemblies
• PSHCE including reflecting on right from wrong and consequences
• citizenship/RE – including the importance of laws and why they are enforced.
• The values and reasons behind rules and laws, that they govern and protect us, the responsibilities this involves and the consequences when laws are broken.
• Youth Speaks – opportunities for debating, learning how to argue and defend ideas and views
• teaching the Academy Rules through the Student Bulletin, assemblies, our behaviour policy, home-school agreement, internet safety agreement and everyday life modelled by Academy staff
• visiting speakers such as Police Service for assemblies and Theme Days

We teach and promote the concept of INDIVIDUAL LIBERTY through

• student responsibilities of Head Students and Student Leaders (with a range of responsibilities), numeracy and literacy mentors, peer mentors, librarians and Academy Council representatives.
• delivering leadership courses
• providing a wide range of enrichment activities which students can choose from
• E-Safety and safeguarding lessons/activities as part of assemblies and the PSHCE programme
• personalisation of learning
• a commitment to Anti-bullying

We teach and promote MUTUAL RESPECT through:

• respect is central to our academy ethos
• our Academy Rules
• collaborating with other schools
• competing against other schools
• PSHCE Programme and Theme Days
• circle time as part of the tutorial programme
• charity fund raising events
• participating in local community events including hosting a number of exchanges (including Zambia, China, Netherlands)
• welcoming visitors to the Academy respectfully.

We teach and promote TOLERANCE OF DIFFERENT FAITHS AND CULTURES through:

• academy assemblies
• visits to other countries and places of worship
• RE curriculum
• charity events including themed days
• European Day of Languages
• visitors and Speakers in the Academy
• academy displays
• library Books and resources
