Learning Across The Curriculum

Promoting spiritual, moral, social and cultural development across the curriculum

All national curriculum subjects provide opportunities to promote students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Explicit opportunities are provided in religious education, citizenship and the personal, social and health education programmes.

A significant contribution is also made by the school ethos, effective relationships throughout the school, collective worship, and other curricular activities.

Promoting Personal Development Programme

  • The following key skills are embedded across the curriculum; they help learners to improve their leaning and performance in education, work and life

Literacy

Literacy across the curriculum includes skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing. Departments identify in their planning opportunities to develop literacy skills. KS3 Strategy training has help to identify areas of focus and provide resource materials.

Numeracy

Opportunities to apply calculation skills and the understanding of number to problems are identified across the curriculum.

Information Technology

The key skill of ICT includes the ability to use a range of ICT tools to find, analyse, interpret, evaluate and present information for a range of purposes. Opportunities for develop this key skill are provided explicitly through the subject of ICT and through students’ use of ICT across the curriculum.

Thinking Skills

By using thinking skills students can focus on ‘knowing how’ as well as ‘knowing what’ – learning how to learn.

The following thinking skills are developed across the curriculum: reflection, problem solving, information-processing, reasoning skills, enquiry skills, creative thinking skills and evaluation skills.

The Key Stage 3 Strategy for the Foundation Subjects helps the school to focus on these skills and further enhance their development.
